Stearic Acid
Stearic acid emulsifies by breaking the surface tension of the items to be emulsified. The ability of stearic acid to combine water and oil with dirt make it especially useful in cleansers where the oils and water can remove dirt and build up from the skin.

Stearic Acid – Plant-Derived Thickener & Emulsifier
Stearic Acid is a saturated fatty acid from natural oils like shea butter, cocoa butter, and coconut oil. Widely used in cosmetic and personal care formulations, it enhances texture, stability, and skin feel—making it a staple for formulators seeking rich, luxurious products.
Key Benefits:
Emulsifier: Helps blend oil and water phases in creams and lotions.
Thickening Agent: Adds body and firmness to emulsions and butters.
Skin Conditioning: Softens and protects the skin barrier.
Soap Hardener: Improves hardness and opacity in cold process soaps.
Common Applications:
Lotions, creams, and body butters
Shaving creams and deodorants
Hair conditioners and styling products
Cold process and melt-and-pour soaps
Use Rate:
Product Type Recommended Use Rate
Lotions & Creams 2% – 5%
Soaps 3% – 8%
Hair Products 1% – 3%
pH Stability:
Stable between pH 4.0 to 9.0
Compatible with most cosmetic actives and preservatives.
Formulator’s Note
Stearic Acid should be added during the heated oil phase, melting at approximately 69–70°C. It pairs well with emulsifiers like Glyceryl Stearate, Cetyl Alcohol, and Polysorbates to create smooth, stable emulsions.
Pro Tip: In soap making, Stearic Acid boosts bar hardness and opacity. Use sparingly to avoid overly stiff or crumbly textures.
